You would think that because only about 60 miles separate the cities of Athens and Atlanta, Georgia that maybe the same sphere of influence would affect both. In the past decade, Atlanta has seen the growth of a creatively sustainable music scene, and we sort of forgot about our neighbors up the road. There is no shortage of great bars, restaurants and clubs in Athens, but it's been a little while since an Athens band made me want to jump in my car and make the trip. Vincas have given me that much needed excuse. Blood Bleeds is a monster of a record. They are playing dark and heavy songs that at once will draw Birthday Party and Gun Club comparisons. I'd bet they have some later Scientists records in their collections too as there is a discernible element of swampishness weaving itself throughout the record. It's sexy in a super-bitter dark chocolate kind of way and has a pounding cohesiveness throughout. Vincas demonstrate total control from start to finish, and it's pretty clear that they didn't just stumble onto a style of music like this. We truly hope the folks over in Athens realize what they've got on their hands.

Nikki & the Phantom Callers
Welcome, and thank you for stopping by to visit. We are "Nikki & the Phantom Callers," a Southern Gothic Rock-n-Roll outfit from Atlanta, Georgia.

Nikki Speake is a vocalist and songwriter from Dadeville, Alabama who started writing dark country numbers at 16. Her first band was an all-girl punk band, Whistle Bait, from Auburn, Alabama which frequently opened for such acts as the Legendary Shack Shakers and the Immortal Lee County Killers. She then fronted the Auburn band, Virgil Otis, which was featured in Southeastern Performer and played the inaugural kickoff for the now famous Old 280 Boogie in Waverly, AL. Since moving to Atlanta, she has played in many local bands, such as Sioux City Sue, 30 Year Old Women From Mars, Shantih Shantih and Midnight Larks. Over this time period, she has opened for Shannon and the Clams, Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires, King Kahn and the Shrines, and Southern Culture on the Skids just to name a few.

She has been honored with a super group of Atlanta musicians, dubbed "The Phantom Callers," which include:

Anna Kramer//Bass and Backing Vocals: Atlanta's Sweetheart of Rock-n-Roll! Everyone loves Anna, and her music. She has been a fixture in the Atlanta community for over 15 years, she currently tours internationally as a solo artist, with her band, Anna Kramer and The Lost Cause, and as lead guitarist in Shantih Shantih. Her many noted performances include a duet with the band Weezer, as well as sharing the bill with a range of acts from icons, Ronnie Spector, Wanda Jackson and Country Legend Charlie Louvin, to Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Andrew Bird, Mudhoney and Tommy Ramone of The Ramones.

Aaron Mason//Lead Guitar: Aaron Mason first moved to Atlanta in 1996. He was a founding member of the instrumental group Ocelot, a main stay of the Atlanta Rock scene from 1998 through 2002. After that he worked as a guitar teacher and co-conspirator with many of ATL’s finest until 2007. He disappeared to the land of Austin, TX until 2014. While there, he crafted his chops in all of the roots of Rock Music while hustling away in the freedom of lance world. After a few years back in Atlanta, Ga, he has re-established himself as a Georgia musician with Blake Rainy and His Demons, Timmy James & the Blue Flames, and now, Nikki and the Phantom Callers.
